30 dead in Assam, Arunachal as record rainfall triggers flash floods and landslides across Northeast

At least 30 people have died over the past 48 hours due to continuous heavy rainfall causing flash floods and landslides across five northeastern states — Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Mizoram. Officials confirmed widespread damage to infrastructure, displacement of residents, and multiple deaths in the affected regions.

In Assam, five deaths were reported in Kamrup Metropolitan district alone. A major landslide in the Bonda area of Guwahati claimed the lives of three women. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported that over 60,000 people have been affected in 12 districts. Guwahati recorded 111 mm of rainfall in a single day, breaking a 67-year-old rainfall record. Floodwaters have inundated several low-lying areas, and relief operations are ongoing.

In Arunachal Pradesh, a landslide along NH-13 in East Kameng district on Friday night swept a Brezza SUV carrying two families into a gorge between Bana and Seppa, killing seven people. A Sumo vehicle traveling behind narrowly avoided being swept away. Arunachal Pradesh Home Minister Mama Natung stated in a Facebook post, “It’s very painful to hear about the tragic loss of seven lives in my Assembly constituency… I urge everyone to remain vigilant and to avoid night travel during the monsoon season.”

Elsewhere in Arunachal, two restaurant workers from Assam’s Lakhimpur district died after being buried in a landslide in Ziro’s Pine Grove area. DySP Ojing Lego confirmed that a rescue operation by SDRF, ITBP, and local residents led to the recovery of the bodies, which were handed over to their families.

The India Meteorological Department has issued red and orange alerts for various districts across the Northeast. Authorities have increased patrolling in landslide-prone zones, reinforced highway safety measures, and advised residents to avoid non-essential travel. Rivers including the Brahmaputra continue to swell, prompting flood-control measures in several areas.
